Hi guys,

once downloaded a WU, BOINC opens a new VM and starts running. Most of the WUs stop working with "calculation error" and a new WU starts. The VM belonging to the old, crashed WU continues running. So in the end I had 3 running ATLAS WUs but 12 running VMs. Obviously nothing worked any more.

I am running BOINC 7.4.36 and Oracle VirtualBox 4.3.22 on an i7 4770K OC and Win 7 Prof 64 bit with 16GB RAM

If I missed the solution of my problem in the FAQ I am sorry!

Thank you for the quick answer. I am not sure whether I have VM Hypervisor installed. But I think I solved the problem.

First I was trying to run ATLAS and vLHC together. The 32 bit vLHC made the problems by flooding my VirtualBox (I will try to solve this in the vLHC forum), not ATLAS.

So ATLAS is running finde now. There is just one problem left. I tried to cap ATLAS at 4 VMs with

<app_config>
<app>
<name>ATLAS</name>
<max_concurrent>4</max_concurrent>
</app>
</app_config>

but it is just ignoring this configuration. I can only limit it by setting up BOINC to 50% Multiprocessor usage.
The app_config.xml is in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\atlasathome.cern.ch

Config looks correct, try to load it in the Boinc Client. "Extras, Konfigurationsdatei lesen".

Running vLHC and ATLAS at the same machine should work too.

Danke, aber... //Thanks, but...

I tried that "read config data" but the BOINC Manager keeps starting as many WUs as "Multiprocessor usage" allows.

Regarding vLHC in combination with ATLAS: I use Vbox 4.3.22 but for vLHC I need 4.3.12. So I will not downgrade (instead, I run vLHC on my Laptop. Working.)

Over night, I had 7 WUs running at once(95% multiprocessor usage allowed). I supppose I got calculation errors again because of full RAM. Only one WU finished, the rest spammed my Vbox with offline machines. I suppose you know the error message "Postponed, VM environment needs cleanup"? What can I do about that?

I've checked on my machine, filename, location, config values, looks all correct.

BoincData\projects\atlasathome.cern.ch\app_config.xml <app_config> <app> <name>ATLAS</name> <max_concurrent>10</max_concurrent> </app> </app_config>

Postponed, VM environment needs cleanup"?
No idea. May its caused by running low on memory. Have you already tried the standard IT support procedure? (reboot).

Maybe you use another BOINC Manager version?

Sure, restarting does help with the stuck WUs but it does not clean up the VM environment automatically so ATLAS just spams more VMs. I always manually delete stuck VMs.

Right now its running with 62,5% multicore-use (5 cores) and pretty stable if I do not do anything parallel.

Oh no! I was stupid. Usually I set all extensions visible on alll my machines, I forgot that on that one.
Haha it was app_config.xml.txt all the time

Thanks for taking your time to answer unnecessary questions :/

p.s. I do not want to make too much of advertising here, but you can get "paid" for BOINC crunching through Gridcoin. It does not cover the electricity costs YET, but I am certain its going that way. The first cryptocurrency with a meaningful principle, without wasting so much electricity. Anyway, Happy Crunching.

Its okay.
I regularly run the BOINC Skype Help watch, and teaching people how to use Windows is a part of the job!
