the other day i notied that something was downloading some stuff as fast as my DSL could deliver it. some investigation has confirmed that atlas is the culprit. question is, what is it sucking down and why should i allow it? and no, i'm NOT talking about new units, they would show up under the transfers tab in BOINC manager. so whats going on here?

Hello!

First of all, i am by no means an expert, there people around here (this forum) who have much more knowledge regarding your question than i do, but i try to answer your question anyways:
When you download a work unit it will start a virtual machine with virtualbox. this vritual machine will start and connect to cern servers and other servers. It will download some data from these servers which are needed by the VM in order to be able to complete/run the task.
At the start page is written: The work units may use a lot of network bandwidth, so a slow internet connection may reduce work unit efficiency

Hope that answers your qustion!
