Hi,

I have recently installed boinc onto my computer but i am not getting any tasks at all...
i am running LHC@home which is processing fine, but nothing for ATLAS :(

windows 10 pro (1607)
boinc 7.6.33 (x64)
oracle vm virtualbox 5.1.12 (installed manually after some information from this forum)

this is what i am getting from the event log

I just noticed this information from LHC

17/01/2017 9:52:08 AM | LHC@home | This computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress

is it computer and project dependant on getting tasks or just computer?

if it is just computer then that explains why im not getting any tasks for ATLAS....

what should i increase or decrease to get jobs for all my projects?

Hi , Yoshi900 ,

check your computer's features

if VT-X is enabled in your Bios.
and in your account preferences,

if the amount of ram available for boinc is enough (at least 3 GBytes for single core application and 9GBytes for a 8-multicore tasks,so you have to suit the ram memory to the number of cores you want to use*

if the disk place for boinc projects is higher than 20 GByte to be secure

if you have allowed the single core and multi-core applications to be run

if you have an always-on net wire...

last version :

boinc : 7.6.33
virtualbox : 5.1.14

*If you want to use your 12 processors , you can define 3 "4-multicores" tasks, to optimise your computer by addind an app_config.xml file in the atlas directory.(C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\atlasathome.cern.ch)

<app_config>

<app_version>
<app_name>ATLAS_MCORE</app_name>
<avg_ncpus>4.000000</avg_ncpus>
<plan_class>vbox_64_mt_mcore</plan_class>
<cmdline>--memory_size_mb 5700</cmdline>
</app_version>

</app_config>

the formula is 2500 MBytes + 800 * (cores number used by the task)= memory size affected to the work unit.
so 2500+800*4=5700 for this case.

but you have much more possibilities because of your RAM 32 GBytes.

Make trials to choose the best configuration for you...

If it doesn't work , say which other projects or tasks are you running simultaneously...

Hi Philippe,

I couldnt find the vt-x in my account preferences, it is on in the bios cause i can create and run a vm in the virtualbox and the task manager says "virtualization: Enabled"

i added the setup file to use more ram.

I am running

ATLAS@home
Cosmology@home
LHC@home
VirtualLHC@home

i just added cosmology@home for testing (as it reckons it runs a vm as well) however i think they might have dropped that...

I dont exactly know what else could be the issue,

I am running the project folder from the D drive as it has more space which i have allowed boinc to use 200gb

could there be a running issue if the project folder is set to another drive other than the system drive (or default drive)?

Message 6016 - Posted: 18 Jan 2017, 16:52:27 UTC - in response to Message 6014.

Sorry for the delay , but i'm on the earth other side.

Maybe , the issue is in the 5°) of the Yeti's checklist

5.Did you try to crunch Projects using VMs in the past while VT-X was not enabled? Could be that BOINC has kept this in mind!

To check and fix this, first exit BOINC and make sure, all BOINC-Tasks have really finished.

In your BOINC_Data-Directory you will find a client_state.xml. Open this with a simple editor and search for:

<p_vm_extensions_disabled>1</p_vm_extensions_disabled>

If this is absent or the number is 0 / zero than all is fine. Otherwise change it to 0 / zero <p_vm_extensions_disabled>0</p_vm_extensions_disabled> and safe the file. Be carefull to save it as a real ascii-file

Be carefull that you closed your BOINC-Client succesfull before you change anything in client_state.xml. Otherwise BOINC will overwrite your changes

Un-attach project ,reboot your computer and re-attach the project to be sure that the reset has really be done.

Normally , the best to initiate atlas tasks is to run only one task , without other projects running.
But when the set-up is well adapted , you can run as many projects as you want(if your computer allow it ...)

thats ok for the delay,,,
so i did everything u said, even in the end uninstalled boinc and reinstalled it.
still cannot get a project, it does download the master file and everything seems ok there, i dont have any other projects in bonic atm just waiting for ATLAS to get going.
I dont have a graphics card in the computer if that helps, however i am at a loss to know why its not working.

I even turned on all the logging to see if there was an error, however it said "unknown reason"

I will wait for your reply and if i cannot fix it i might have to bail on this project, I think i will install on works computer to see if i can get any luck there :(

ok looks like it worked fine on the work computer... what i did notice that doesnt come up on the home server/computer is this log...
19/01/2017 11:28:08 AM | ATLAS@home | Requesting new tasks for CPU and AMD/ATI GPU and Intel GPU
I dont have a GPU in the server/computer at home (it is a Dell T320) maybe there might be a way to install a graphics controller. brb. :P

Well , Yoshi900, the end of your message is rather surprising because the atlas tasks can't be performed with a GPU.
Only CPU are needed.

In my boinc diary , when it works ,the informations are shown like this :

19/01/2017 18:05:46 | ATLAS@home | Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.

I see your tasks on your work computer , so the parameters are good for this one.

The matter is for your home server.
There is a difference in their settings to do a different behavior.
GPU is not "the" difference
If VT-X is enabled

,if HyperV is removed,
if virtualbox is installed,with the extension pack ( both same version)
if your preferences account are good because they work on the other computer,
maybe try to temporarily disable your firewall and your anti-virus to see if this is the reason.
if no result,the last chance is to do a teamviewer session with a skilled boincer, i'm not good enough to do it but i advise you Yeti who manage a lot of powerful clients (this is the third in recent average credit on this project) but the distance between each of you could be to much high to give good conditions.
Send him a private message before to agree on a specific hour to do the meeting.
He is busy , so be patient...
Give him the url of my message:
http://atlasathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=652&postid=6028
,so he can understand more quickly,the problem...

yay finally got it working.... didnt need a gfx card :)

it was quite simple /sigh

hyper-v was installed.

(which is installed by default with windows 10 (maybe anniversary pack))

so once i unchecked the checkbox to uninstall it and rebooted the server it was ready to go :) and started downloading some jobs YAY!

thanks so much for helping :)

ok last thing,

why do i want to do this ?

*If you want to use your 12 processors , you can define 3 "4-multicores" tasks, to optimise your computer by addind an app_config.xml file in the atlas directory.(C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\atlasathome.cern.ch)

<plan_class>vbox_64_mt_mcore</plan_class>
<cmdline>--memory_size_mb 5700</cmdline>
</app_version>

</app_config>

the formula is 2500 MBytes + 800 * (cores number used by the task)= memory size affected to the work unit.
so 2500+800*4=5700 for this case.

but you have much more possibilities because of your RAM 32 GBytes.

does Atlas only use 2 or 4 cpus?

if so i would be happy to give it 8 cpus + 20gb of ram. what would be the settings for that?

Good news!!! for the project if you can participate.

Thanks for the feedback information which enables other volunteers to understand what it has to be done to join this project.(Remove HyperV).

When you are added to the project, you choose the kind of tasks you want to run in your preference account.
By default, the atlas server sends you tasks which can be done by your computer.
But it may not suit with your desires if you want to reduce the load of your computer(if you run other projects , or encode video or improve photo...).

As you can see , servers sends you only singles cores and 8-multicores tasks.

Various possibilities are offered to you:

Run single core task and / or multicore task:

the single cores use only one cpu and needs 2500 MBytes of RAM.It suits very well for low configurations (less than 4 GBytes of RAM).

the multi cores use the number of cpu you want to use(maximum is 8 cpus) and needs 2500+800*number cpu used of ram in MBytes.It suits for more powerful computers.(like yours)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So in your specific case, you agree to run 8 cpu and allow 20 GBytes of RAM :

Either you set up in your preference account :

(32 GBYtes *65% nearly equals 20 GBytes)
while computer in service use max of 65 % of ram
while computer not in service use max of 65 % of ram
and you disable single-core
you do anything else and you look at the behavior of your computer
Normally only 1 "8-multi-core" would be run at a time

Either you can try this:

Run 2 "4-multi-cores" tasks simultaneously.

The settings are :

<app_config>

<app_version>
<app_name>ATLAS_MCORE</app_name>
<avg_ncpus>4.000000</avg_ncpus>
<plan_class>vbox_64_mt_mcore</plan_class>
<cmdline>--memory_size_mb 5700</cmdline>
</app_version>
<project_max_concurrent>2</project_max_concurrent>
</app_config>

Edit an app_config.xml file with notepad.
Fill in with the above instructions.
Save it under this name choosing "all files" and not "txt files".
It's important because boinc needs an xml file, not a txt file...
And locate it in the atlas directory (C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\atlasathome.cern.ch)

Disable single core application in your preference account.
and reboot your computer to apply the changes.

You have to keep in mind that boinc tasks have low priority.

Normally change will take effect after the last task downloaded previously is finished .(or aborted).

You can try other settings,there are many threads on this forum which speaks about it.

Happy crunch!
