I have an i5-2520M 2.5 ghz with 4 gb RAM (3.88 usuable).

I can't get the multicores to run.

I'm looking at the Virtualbox Interface (which I don't really understand how to use and seems to work independent of BOINC).

Couple items:

I get a warning the RAM setting is too high (basically all the available RAM), yet when I looked at the grayed out properties it's only set at 2+gb??

The task seems to intialize if I start it manually but eventually clears the screen and then drops to a localhost login prompt with little to offer except: In order to apply cernvm-online context, use #<PIN> as user name.

I've tried shutting down BOINC, shutting down the task, but it remains at Waiting for memory. The single cores I can run just fine though.

I'm on the latest Vbox.

You may work through this checklist:

Hi , Yavanius ,

i advise you to run only atlas single-core work units because you have only 4 GBytes RAM.
A single core wu needs just 2241 MBytes RAM whereas multi core wu requires at least 3300 MBytes RAM for the moment.
I have the same config as yours (4 cores - 4 GBytes RAM) and after doing tests , the better is to run only single core wu so disable multi-core apps in your atlas preferences account.
You can use the 3 other cores with cpu tasks only without Using VirtualBox (sixtrack for instance) to optimize your computer 's use.

I think they started to run but then they stalled early out (probably trying to all run at the same time). I tried looking for info on running multis but the info is scattered all the forums. :/

I'm just trying out different things and thought I see how the multicore ran.

I'll give the checklist a try just to see if I can get it going. It's not a big deal if I have to run JUST that. And if doesn't, well, at least I gained a little bit of experience out of it. :)

Is the ExtensionPack still required and why is it needed or helpful when the single core runs (sofar as I can tell) just fine without it?

I haven't had a chance to try configuring for the multicore. Somehow some of my main Intel drivers got screwed up and Windows kept crashing (BOINC and incorrectly installed device drivers really gives Windows bad heartburn). Fortunately, I was able to do a batch update of them. Maybe this weekend I can get to it when I get caught with clearing out some of the backlog of my WUs.
